Collis Ta’eed

Hello Fellow Netsetter!

My name is Collis. I started this blog because I love talking about startups, marketing, and business online. With the barriers to starting your own online business getting lower and lower, there’s a growing class of online entrepeneurs that I sometimes call the net set, kinda like that old term the jet set – which doesn’t make much sense any more now that I think about it. From that term came the name of this blog, because I hope that you dear reader are a fellow netsetter!

My Own Background

Personally, I began professionally as a web designer. But I’ve always loved the idea of creating my own business. All my life I have had various enterprises I tried with varying levels of success – from operating a minibakery in my dad’s office as a 10 year old, to hauling in crates of otherwise contraband soft drinks to my high school, jacking up the price and making a healthy profit, to opening a freelance design business after deciding I could do it better than my employer.

Still sales and service businesses really weren’t my thing and it wasn’t until I discovered the web that I found my place in life. In 2006 with three friends I cofounded a startup called Envato. Under the umbrella of Envato I’ve worked on building digital goods marketplaces like FlashDen and ThemeForest, a chain of successful tutorial blogs at Tuts+, a popular freelancing community at FreelanceSwitch, some successful ebooks at Rockable Press and lots of other projects!

I also love dogs, cats, pretty much any animal actually. I play the piano (rather melodramatically when I’m glum). I’m married to Cyan who is very awesome and keeps me company during my many cups of tea to think about business. I obsessively write in Moleskine notebooks, plans, numbers, and terrible drawings. And I’m not supposed to be at my computer because it’s the weekend, so I’m going to cut this about page short … here.
