How to Get Started as a Web Entrepreneur

In the last four years of building up Envato I’ve had the opportunity to learn a lot about growing and building web companies. So I decided to put some of my learnings into a presentation I gave at WebDU 2010 earlier this year. The talk covered how I would approach starting up from scratch, and throughout I referenced a hypothetical new startup idea and how I might approach it.

Today I got the audio for the talk back and I’ve put up the slides that go with it. You can view and listen to the talk below! I hope you enjoy it and find it useful. I was rather nervous, so you’ll have to excuse me if I sound a little breathless :-)

The Slides

What would you do differently?

If you had to start from scratch again, would you approach things in the same way? What lessons have you learnt along the way?

Collis Ta'eed: Hi, my name is Collis and I work at Envato where I provide general vision, design, marketing, new business ideas, and generally work very hard!

Discussion

  1. Braden says:

Brilliant presentation! I really enjoyed your story and perspective. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, and there is no need to be nervous; you’re engaging, thoughtful, and credible—a hat-trick for commanding an audience.

  2. Collis in my opinion is among the smartest, people in the space. This talk (even the design of the slides) further proves it. The world has yet to really discover all that Collis has done and will do. I will be watching. You should too.

  3. Steve says:

A man who knew nothing 4 years ago is now teaching how to what? Web entrepreneur? Looks like It’s time for me to start teaching the liver transplantation.

  4. Nagarjun Palavalli says:

The audio doesn’t work. The error message: File not found. Would be nice if you could fix it.

  5. Rachel Baker says:

    Collis,
Thank you for sharing your experience. Something can be learned from everyone.

  6. Only discovered netsetter yesterday and now I’m seriously impressed. I’ll be a regular visitor.
    Excellent ideas, clearly explained.

I would love to listen to regular podcasts from this site – there are so few good podcasts out there.

    Well done and thank you.

  7. marvincspw says:

    I Really like your story

    Thanks for sharing.

  8. Me too!
    I like it.This is a good story.

  9. I’m currently in the process of launching my first product, and I’ve basically done everything in the “throw it out there and tweak from there” mentality. Your talk was very inspirational and your piece on marketing really spoke to what I’m currently in the middle of.

    Thank you.

  10. Michael says:

I love the audio, I am half way through and it is great. I think biggest frustration for me regarding starting business that it is very long run.

  11. This is so helpful, thank you!

  12. Malena says:

Great PowerPoint graphics. :) It’s refreshing to see a presenter that knows the importance of great design.

  13. Gabe says:

Thanks for the post, this is interesting to listen to.

  14. VangelisB says:

I launched my first web app about a month ago. This cleared some of the mess in my head about marketing and promotion. Very helpful presentation, thanks for sharing.

  15. Kendall says:

Wow…. practical information. Not a pie in the sky sort of concept filled cookie sheet. Real life experience brought down to level ground. Very useful information for the startup we are working on.

  16. First of all, thnx for including the audio bit. I never understood why people insert slides without the audio. Am I supposed to imagine what they’re saying? anywho….

Second, there is a service that does something like it minus the ads. It’s called Triberr and I’m the Founder of it :-)

Also, thnx to our expertise in game mechanics, our conversion rates are way better than 1%. They are actually better than Farmville convs, but I dont want to brag :-)

Anyways, I really enjoyed the presentation, and again, thank you for the audio version.
